Chetan S. won first place in the essay contest for his
division in the America’s Wetland Foundation contest entitled
Keep Your Eye on the Prize Art, Photo and Essay Contest. As a first
place winner, Chetan will receive a $500 award for Episcopal
for a wetlands restoration project supervised by the America’s
Wetlands Conservation Corps, and his essay will be presented at
the Conference of State Legislatures meeting in New Orleans in
July.
Chetan’s prize winning essay was completed as part of
an innovative 5th grade cross-curricular unit weaving together
the study of coastal conservation and water testing, the study
of survival novels, the study of writing highlighting the writer’s
craft and using the 5 senses, a “naturalist’s notebook” project
and a planned field trip to the Bluebonnet Swamp. “It was
the perfect example of cross-curricular teaching where the real
learning was through the hands of the children,” said Margaret
Boudreaux, 5th grade English teacher.
