Youth Legislature

Youth Legislature:

will be attended by all eighth graders. This program introduces students to the legislative process. Students receive instruction through cross curricular lessons. They then participate in a two-day mock legislative session.

Youth Legislature promotes and encourages youth leadership, participation, cooperation and teamwork among peers. The event gives the student the confidence they need to go on to participate in leadership roles in high school and in their community.

There is a $30.00 registration fee per participant. A check should be made out to Episcopal with a memo for Youth Legislature registration. There will also be a transportation fee. A second check made out for $6.30 to Episcopal will be needed. The memo should read transportation fee.

We will attend session eight of the Youth Legislature to be held on April 3 - 4, 2008 at the Old State Capitol. For an eighth grader to attend, parents must sign the Hold Harmless form and the Camp Fire Youth Registration form.

Students should dress properly and bring a lunch and drink on April 3-4, 2008.

Youth Legislature Jobs:

1. Legislator.
You will be either a Senator or Representative. Some legislatures will serve as a Bill Sponsor, Bill co-sponsor, Committee Chair, or a Committee Co-chair.

2. Candidates for Office. Candidates for office will be allowed to give a campaign speech. Each speech should be no more than one minute. The speech should reflect the candidate's platform or what he wishes to accomplish during the session. Beyond simply mentioning it once, the candidate should avoid referring to which school they attend. A Candidate will not be allowed to pass out handouts of any type. You should write and practice your speech. The following offices are open for one candidate from each school: Governor, Speaker of the House, President of the Senate.

3. Press Delegate. You have been given a list of possible writing assignments from a Youth Legislature session. Please begin preparing questions that you can ask to complete your assignments. You have also been given a packet of nine bills that will be presented by Episcopal to the Youth Legislature. You may want to develop questions to ask bill sponsors about their bills!
