The Episcopal
Powerlifting team is currently in its 17th year of existence.
The powerlifting team is open to any boy or girl in grades
8 12 who are deemed physically capable for the
sport.
Steve Baronich heads up the weightlifting program at Episcopal.
He has over 20 years of experience in the field of strength
and conditioning. He is currently the Treasurer of the Louisiana
High School Powerlifiting Association (LHSPLA)
and is a certified by the United States Weightlifting Federation
as a Category I weightlifting coach.
Powerlifting meets are held during the year from early December
until the first weekend in March. One of the primary meets
held during the season is the East Regional Powerlifting
Championship, which serves as a qualifying meet for the
annual LHSPLA Championship
Meet. The annual state meet is held on the first weekend
in March. The 2008 East Regional will be held in late January
at Brusly High School in Brusly, La. The 2008 LHSPLA State
Meet will be held at a host site in the Southeren part of
the state.
Boys
compete in any one of 11 weight classes that range from 114 lbs. and below to
the Superheavyweight class (275 lbs. and above). Girls also compete in 11 weight
classes that range from 97 lbs. and below to 220 lbs. and above. The three lifts
performed in powerlifting competitions are the Squat, Bench Press, and the Deadlift.
The total weight of the best lift in each exercise determines the winner in each
weight class.
The Girls and Boys team members lift on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays Workouts last between 1 ½ to 2 hours. The weightlifting
program provides all uniforms, lifting belts, and wraps for
the lifters. |
